In 2023, we at Griffin Construction proposed on the CM/GC Black Butte School project located in Camp Sherman, OR. After winning the bid, we partnered with the Black Butte School District and SAJ Architecture to begin pre-construction – supporting cost-effective measures during design to keep pricing down. In June of 2024 we officially broke ground and launched the construction of Phase 1: the Modernization. Reducing disruptions to school operations, we performed the modernization during the summer while school was out. Once the modernization was complete, we began work on Phase 2: the Addition. The entire project from pre-construction, to modernization, and to the Addition took approximately 20 months.
The school now sits a little brighter and a little larger amid the surrounding tall pines. The facility is 3,500SF, with the addition being 1,750SF. It was a labor of love to ensure this historic schoolhouse maintained its iconography, while also upgrading elements, finishes, and structural support to secure a longer lifespan for the school. The students officially began their school year in the new & upgraded facility the fall of 2025 and have already made the space a home with paintings, craft projects, and more. We enjoyed our time working with the Staff & Students of the school as well as our architectural partners SAJ Architecture.
